Go Nuts and Get a Little Seedy!
I live in the desert, so I'm always religious about water. I don't leave the house without it, even in moderate weather. That got driven home last week (pardon the pun) when I pulled off to the side of the road to make a phone call. I was two feet from the pavement, but when I started to roll forward to leave I got stuck in a sea of soft sand and dirt. Two feet from the pavement, and two feet deep in sand. I had to call a damn tow truck. But I read a book and I stayed hydrated. But I was hungry!
We're having record heat here, over 118 this afternoon in our backyard. You still have to go out and run errands. I got caught yesterday. I had to get the car serviced, plus shopping and paying bills. I wasn't in any place long enough to cool down, and then I wasn't in the car long enough to revive.
I had a half gallon of iced water And I had my bag of nuts. I'm lucky enough to have a source for roasted, unsalted mixed nuts, so I mixed it with another bag of raw nuts and seeds and dried fruit. So there's roasted and raw almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, pecans, cashews, raisins, dried cranberries, dried mango, dried papaya...hmm...pepitas, sunflower seeds, and I'm sure I'm missing something.
Anyway, what I found was that I was hungry, but too hot to eat. So I just kept drinking water and drinking water. About the last two hours of running, I started to nibble on the trail mix. Bam, hunger gone! More energy, nothing hard to digest in the heat.
I'm never going out without my nuts again! The only thing I have to look for now is more unsalted mixes to add to the bag as it gets low. I was adding good dark chocolate chips, but I can't be trusted to keep them down to an acceptable level. I've even been known to dig through the bottom of the bag to find them. And now I'm thinking about butterscotch chips.
Okay, back to the nuts. Find your own mixes, roast your own, eat them raw. It doesn't matter. They'll be a great staple to keep with you, either in your glove box or in a survival kit. And if you spill your nuts (as I did) you can just sweep the detritus out of the car and delight the local squirrel population (as I also did).
One thing was nice about needing the tow truck. The same guy who changed my tire about a month ago responded to this call, so we had a great chat about him cannon balling into his pool from his garage roof. Oh shoot, I was going to ask him how his dogs are. Anyway, it was nice, sitting frustrated in the heat, to have a familiar face roll up and help me out.
And you know, I could have offered him a bag of nuts!
